Over time, the body can change due to weight fluctuations, pregnancy, heredity, prior surgery, and/or the natural aging process. Among the most stubborn areas that can become bothersome for both men and women is the abdomen. Many people have bulging fatty tissue or sagging skin in the abdominal region that is impossible to get rid of with traditional weight-loss methods.
Often, no amount of diet and exercise can remove excess fat and skin or tighten the abdominal muscles.
Tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, is a common procedure performed to create a more attractive abdominal profile.
Tummy Tuck Candidates
Improve Abdominal Contours
Tummy tuck surgery involves the removal of excess fat and skin from the abdomen as well as the tightening of the abdominal muscles. Patients will achieve a significant reduction in tissue and more defined abdominals to create a flatter, smoother midsection. They will notice how dramatically tummy tuck surgery can improve the overall abdominal contours and the firmness of the abdomen.
Enhance Body Shape
By making changes to one area of the body, patients can expect to achieve an overall body transformation. Dr. Taranow will utilize an individualized procedure that is tailored to your body type and personal preferences. Tummy tuck surgery is often combined with liposuction to create beautiful results that enhance the entire body shape.
Many people who are unsatisfied with the appearance of their abdomen may steer away from revealing or tighter fashions such as bathing suits, tanks tops, and dresses. After undergoing tummy tuck surgery, most patients can’t wait to show off their newly enhanced body that looks good unveiled or underneath clothing.
What to Expect from the Tummy Tuck Surgery
Dr. Taranow will evaluate your natural body type to discuss the best options to help you achieve your tummy tuck goals.
- Tummy tuck surgery is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous (IV) sedation as an outpatient procedure.
- A full tummy tuck may take between two and four hours depending on the extent of correction.
- A horizontal incision is made across the lower abdomen just above the pubic area, and the skin and fat are separated from the abdominal muscles.
- The muscles are tightened to flatten the abdomen and narrow the waistline.
- Excess fat and skin are removed, and the remaining skin (flap) is pulled down and tightened as it is redraped over the newly shaped contours.
- The umbilicus (belly button) is brought out at the same position through a new, smaller vertical opening made by Dr. Taranow to provide a more youthful appearance.
- Liposuction may be performed on the sides and back (flanks) or other areas if desired.
Tummy Tuck FAQS
What should I expect during recovery?
A compression garment will need to be worn to reduce swelling and to support the abdomen as it heals. Patients should reduce any physical activity that strains the abdomen for at least two to three days. Most patients can return to work within two weeks; however, they should avoid strenuous exercise for one month. The total recovery process averages six weeks; this is when most patients notice that residual swelling has subsided and results become apparent. Dr. Taranow will provide postoperative instructions that patients should follow to ensure a safe and effective healing process.
What is a mini tummy tuck?
Some patients may only need minimal correction to achieve their goals. A mini tummy tuck is an ideal procedure for patients with small amounts of fat and skin to be removed. The horizontal incision used is smaller than that of a traditional tummy tuck, and the skin is only lifted to the middle of the stomach rather than the entire abdomen. Excess fat and skin are removed, and weakened abdominal muscles are repaired. A mini tummy tuck typically takes about one to two hours and is performed using general anesthesia or IV sedation.
Will I experience any pain?
There may be some pain due to swelling and bruising. Prescription pain medication can be taken to alleviate any discomfort.
Will there be any scarring?
There will be some scarring following tummy tuck surgery. Dr. Taranow will make the incision as inconspicuous as possible. The incision will extend across the pubic line (bikini line) and can be easily hidden underneath pants, a bathing suit, or underwear. Depending on the patient’s level of healing, scarring will fade and become less noticeable.
Are there any risks or complications?
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications associated with tummy tuck surgery, such as:
- Anesthesia risks
- Changes in skin sensation
- Skin loss
- Blood clots
How much does a tummy tuck cost?
The cost of tummy tuck surgery will depend on the technique employed and whether or not liposuction is used during surgery. After you meet with Dr. Taranow, he can provide you with a customized quote for your procedure.
