Douglas A. Taranow, DO, FACOS

Breast lift surgery, also known as “mastopexy,” tightens the breast tissue and removes excess skin in order to reshape, elevate, and restore firmness to the breasts. Breasts can lose their elasticity from pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, aging, and gravity, which can cause them to lose their shape and sag.

Our New York plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Douglas Taranow, routinely performs breast lift surgery at his New York practice to raise and reshape the breasts for a more youthful appearance. If the breasts have also lost volume, Dr. Taranow often combines the breast lift procedure with breast augmentation surgery to lift and restore volume to the breasts with implants.

The Procedure

Breast lift surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis with the use of intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. One of three incision patterns will be used:

  • Around the edge of the areola;
  • Around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease; or
  • Around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the crease.

After the incision is made, the underlying breast tissue will be reshaped and raised, and the nipple and areola may be elevated to a more youthful position before excess skin is removed. If necessary, the size of the areola may also be reduced during the breast lift procedure.

Before & After

After surgery is complete, swelling, bruising, and soreness will be apparent, but the majority of these symptoms will subside within a week. Pain medication will be prescribed to relieve discomfort, and patients usually return to work about a week after surgery. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least three to four weeks. A specialized support bra or compression garment should be worn for a couple of months to reduce swelling and support the breasts as they heal. Like every plastic surgery, the breast lift procedure has the potential for certain complications, including infection, bleeding, unfavorable scarring, skin loss, reaction to anesthesia, and changes in nipple or breast sensation. In order to reduce your risk of complications, it is very important to carefully follow Dr. Taranow’s postoperative instructions.

The results of breast lift surgery will be noticeable immediately after surgery and will continue to improve as bruising and swelling resolve. Incision lines will also continue to fade over time. Breast lift surgery will provide long lasting results as long as the patient maintains her weight and a healthy lifestyle, but the breasts will continue to be affected by gravity and age naturally.
