Achieving a slim, contoured figure is usually a common goal for most people when starting a diet and exercise plan, but getting rid of stubborn pockets of fat may need more than a healthy lifestyle. Even with vigorous efforts, reaching your weight loss goals may require some medical assistance. Liposuction surgery is a commonly performed procedure for eliminating troublesome areas of fat. Many people find that it is effective in removing stubborn fatty tissue and that it provides a better-contoured figure, but does liposuction really last forever?

Where Does the Fat Go?

Back Liposuction Before and After PhotosLiposuction should not be used as a weight loss solution. The best patients are in good physical and mental health and typically only have a few pockets of fat they would like to target. Common areas that carry excess fat are the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, back, ankles, and neck. Multiple troublesome areas can be addressed during one procedure.

The Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is the permanent removal of fat from almost any area of the body. It is performed in-office under intravenous sedation. Patients are discharged home within one hour post-treatment. The surgeon hides the incisions in the umbilicus, panty line, or inner knees depending on the treatment areas. Dr. Taranow performs the liposculpture technique in a gentle manner to create a slimmer, more proportionate figure. A tumescent solution is used to break up the fat cells before they are removed permanently. A thin, hollow tube (cannula) attached to a vacuum device is inserted beneath the skin through the incisions to suction the fat. After the surgery, the incisions are sutured and covered with a compression garment to reduce swelling.

How Can I Maintain My Liposuction Results?

If you manage your weight, your shape will not typically change. Further weight gain can occur, but fat is usually distributed in other areas of the body that have not been treated with liposuction. Liposuction will not halt the aging process, and patients can still develop signs of aging such as loose skin caused by weakened skin elasticity and loss of collagen. Diet and exercise are paramount in maintaining your curves. Sticking to healthy habits such as eating healthy, refraining from smoking, and exercising frequently will help to prevent future weight gain and create optimal liposuction results.

Healthy patients typically benefit the most from the liposuction procedure. Patients can reduce troublesome fat, sculpt the body, and restore their confidence.
