On the TLC makeover show “What Not to Wear,” fashion mentor Stacy London is known for telling the show’s participants that their clothing size does not define them. Although it may be mentally gratifying to be able squeeze into a size four, it might make the person look worse than if they got their actual size — there could be lumps and bumps in all the wrong places! Stacy encourages the participants to purchase a few staple items in a size that fits them in their largest areas, and then get them tailored down to more perfectly fit their unique shape.

Plastic surgery is similar. Each procedure is “tailored” to meet the needs of the patient. While one patient may need Botox®, another may need a combination of facial procedures to get the result they want. One famous person’s nose will not look good on everyone’s face, just as one breast implant size will not look the best on every woman. Because plastic surgery procedures are often so individualized, the cost varies greatly and is typically determined after the initial consultation.

How to Find a Procedure that Fits

1. Know What You Want

Communication is one of the keys to a successful cosmetic surgery result. You should be able to easily describe what you would like to change about your appearance. Find pictures of people that have the result you want, and bring them to your initial consultation. Dr. Taranow can assess your features and tell you if the look you are going for is feasible with a certain procedure or combination of procedures.

2. Have Realistic Expectations

To be satisfied with the procedure you choose, you must understand what it can and cannot do. Dr. Taranow will give you all the information you need to understand the results you can expect. You can view his before and after photos before your consultation to get an idea of the results that are possible.

3. Schedule a Consultation

Dr. Taranow understands that every patient is unique. Many factors help determine the procedure or combination of procedures that will work with each patient’s unique physical anatomy and personal desires. It is always a good idea to be informed of the procedure you are considering ahead of time, but you can trust that Dr. Taranow will guide you in the right direction with his years of experience as a board certified plastic surgeon.
