The breasts are considered a beautiful characteristic of a woman and set her apart from a man. However, when a man has enlarged breasts, it is not a flattering feature displayed on him and can turn him into a mockery. The terms “man boobs” and “moobs” have been coined, making fun of this unattractive feature that some men possess. The overdevelopment of male breasts (gynecomastia) is a common problem that affects nearly 40 to 60 percent of the male population, and “man boobs” aren’t something to joke about!
Gynecomastia is characterized by a buildup of fat and glandular tissue on the chest wall. Several factors can cause gynecomastia, such as heredity, weight gain or obesity, alcohol, marijuana, and certain medications. Male breast reduction surgery, or gynecomastia surgery, can be performed to get rid of “man boobs” and provide more firm and masculine chest contours.
How Male Breast Reduction Is Performed
Dr. Taranow is an experienced plastic surgeon who performs gynecomastia surgery with precision and skill. The surgery takes about one to one and a half hours to complete. A half inch incision is easily hidden in each armpit. Through the incisions, Dr. Taranow removes excess tissue and fat. If the areolas need to be reduced or excess skin needs to be removed, he may also need to make additional incisions around the nipples or within the breast crease. If excess fatty tissue is not severe and is the sole cause of enlarged breasts, gynecomastia can be corrected with liposuction alone.
Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery
There will be some pain that can be managed with prescribed medication. A chest band should be worn for two weeks to support the chest contours and to aid in healing. A few follow-up visits will be required to ensure the surgery went well and that surgical wounds are healing correctly. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has more information about gynecomastia surgery recovery.
Male Breast Reduction Surgery Candidates
Candidates for male breast reduction surgery have excess fat, skin, and/or glandular tissue in the chest area that causes the appearance of female-like breasts. It is important that patients are in good health, do not have any medical conditions, have stabilized breast development, and are realistic in their expectations. Dr. Taranow can evaluate your condition during a consultation. He will examine your anatomy and goals to help you decide whether gynecomastia surgery is the right procedure for you.
