The holidays are approaching quickly, which means some of us may pack on extra pounds. Stress and overeating often contribute to weight gain during the holiday season. The more fat we gain, the tighter our clothing gets, especially when the years keep passing by and the aging process takes hold. As people age, their metabolisms slow down, making it easy to gain weight and harder to lose fat. Plus, it doesn’t help that we consume foods packed high with fructose corn syrup, sucralose, and other unnatural substances. The ingredients found in these “terrible foods” trick the body into storing more fat than necessary.

The Positive Side to Fat

before-and-after-brazilian-butt-liftExtra holiday fat could actually come in handy. Many people have joked that they wish they could take fat from one area of their body and put it into another. Fat transfer surgery has made that a reality. Fat transfer allows for a person to eliminate unwanted fat from one area and have it injected into another area for volume enhancement. Finally, we can be thankful for our fat!

Using Fat to Restore Volume

Almost any area of the body with extra fat can be used to harvest fat for transferring to another area that lacks volume. Among one of the most popular areas people want more volume in is the buttocks. Fat transfer surgery is used for the “Brazilian Butt Lift” (BBL) to reshape and enlarge the buttocks. Dr. Taranow injects fat into the buttocks, hips, and thighs to create larger, firmer buttocks that contribute to an hourglass shape. Fat transfer surgery is also commonly used to restore facial volume to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How Fat Transfer Surgery Is Performed

Fat transfer surgery is a safe and effective in-office procedure that is performed using intravenous sedation. The procedure can take about one to three hours depending on how many sites are being treated. First, liposuction is performed to remove unwanted fat from the donor site. A small, hollow tube (cannula) that is hooked up to a vacuum device is used to suction out the fat through small incisions. Dr. Taranow ensures the incisions are made in inconspicuous locations. Typically, they are made along the underwear or swimwear lines, within the umbilicus, or on the inner knees. The fat is then cleansed, purified, and placed into small syringes. Specially designed needles are used to inject the fat into the treatment sites.

Patients can return home shortly after the procedure (usually within 30 to 60 minutes). Full results will not be immediately noticeable. It will take time for the fat to settle and the fat cells to be absorbed by the body. Swelling and bruising may appear, which will slowly subside over the next several weeks.

Fat transfer surgery continues to grow in popularity. It has even opened the doors to fat grafting for breast augmentation as an alternative to breast implants. You can achieve beautiful and long-lasting results safely with minimal risks.
