Breast Reduction in New York

Breast reduction reshapes the breasts by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin. This procedure alleviates the discomfort associated with overly large breasts and achieves a breast size that is in better proportion with the patient’s body. Dr. Douglas A. Taranow is a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who will do much more than reduce the volume of your breasts. He will help to improve the problems associated with having heavy, pendulous breasts, such as:

The Procedure

Breast reduction is typically performed on an outpatient basis with the use of intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure typically takes between two and three hours, depending on its complexity. The type of incision technique chosen will depend on the size of the breasts and the amount of fat and glandular tissue present.

Anchor Incision

This is an older standard breast reduction technique that is intended for extremely large breasts. An incision is made around the areola, continues vertically down to the breast fold, and then runs horizontally across the crease (an “anchor” shape). After skin, fat, and glandular tissue are removed from the lower breast, the nipple and areola are repositioned to a higher location. Incisions are then brought together to reshape the breasts into a smaller size.

Vertical Incision

This newer technique is appropriate for breasts that are more moderate in size. It is a less invasive method used for breast reduction. An incision is made around the areola and runs vertically down the breast crease forming a “lollipop” shape. Excess breast tissue and skin are then removed and the incisions are stitched together. The nipple and areola are moved up to a higher position.

Your breasts will feel sore and appear swollen and bruised initially, and you may notice a loss of sensation in the nipple and areola areas for the first few weeks. Prescribed pain medication will relieve the discomfort associated with breast reduction surgery. You may return to work in about one to two weeks, depending on the type of job you have. Normal activities may take about one week and strenuous activities should be avoided for about three to four weeks.

Every plastic surgery procedure has its own set of risks and complications. Some of the most common postoperative problems that may develop after breast reduction include: infection, bleeding, unfavorable scarring, skin loss, reaction to anesthesia, and changes in nipple or breast sensation. In order to help prevent complications from occurring, be sure to follow Dr. Taranow’s instructions.
